Dorothy Riordan Benton, civic leader

Dorothy Riordan Benton, a longtime resident of New Hyde Park and Middle Island who was well known for her civic leadership, died last Thursday at age 90 in a Queens nursing home. Benton, the oldest of six children, was born Dorothy Donnelly on Jan. 12, 1919, to a salesman and homemaker in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She grew up in a brown-stone town house with her extended family nearby. She married Timothy Riordan, a worker with the Schaefer beer company, in 1940 and raised four daughters and two sons. They later divorced. In 1955, she moved her family to New Hyde Park, and became the New Hyde Park Republican club president, one of the first women in that post. Her family described her as "always being a civic leader," for which she earned recognition. In the early 1960s, Benton successfully fought the development of a Hardy's restaurant a fast-food chain, on Hillside Avenue by New Hyde Park Road, said her daughter, Gayle Van Dyke, 58, of Oyster Bay. So Benton organized a petition drive. "Area residents wanted to maintain the country feel of the area," Van Dyke said. Granddaughter Jaime Van Dyke Doran, 31, of Hicksville, says she feels that the area continues to have a small-town feel, thanks to Bentons efforts. "If she wanted done, she would get it done and be a lady about it, Doran said. In 1982, she married Al Benton, a longtime family friend, and moved to Middle Island, where she brought Republicans and Democrats together to work on quality-of-life problems, her family said. By the early 1990s, she retired and moved to Sun City Center, a retirement community in Florida, where she gave neighbors and friends rides to doctors appointments. She moved to the nursing home in 2003. In addition to Van Dyke and Doran, she is survived by a brother, Howard Donnelly, of Kew Gardens Hills, Queens; her son Timothy Riordan of Peachtree City, Ga., daughters Patricia Barresi of Charlotte, N.CL, and Joan Riordan of York, Marne; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There will be a wake today at New Hyde Park Funeral Home in New Hyde Park, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at Notre Dame Church in New Hyde Park tomorrow, with burial at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ozanam Hall of Queens Nursing Home, 42-41 201st St, Bayside, NY 11361.1

She is a legislative assistant to Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris Coschignano and is the daughter of Greg and Gayle Van Dyke of Oyster Bay. The groom is an 11th-grade English teacher for Kellenberg Memorial High School and is the son of Peter and Janet Doran of Rockville Centre. The bride earned a bachelors from Hofstra and is pursuing a master's in public administration from Long Island University's C.W. Post campus. The groom earned a bachelors from St Bonaventure University and a master's in education from Hofstra. They live in Hicksville.1,2

Louise Katherine Breining Resident of San Francisco

Louise Katherine Breining, 78, a longtime Sunset District resident, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. Louise (Mom/ Grammie) was born on July 11, 1929 in Oakland, CA, to the late Lova and Einer Bouquest. When her family moved to San Francisco she attended Polytechnic High School. Louise married Fred Gerald Breining (deceased) on Feb. 26, 1949 and became a fulltime homemaker for her husband and their subsequent 12 children. She was a devout Catholic, a loyal Democrat, a diehard Giants fan, a 49er faithful, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In an article written by Ken Garcia, the SF Chronicle columnist, Louise and Fred recalled "Raising the kids was the best time of our lives ... And we've had a great life." She is survived by her 12 children: Marie, Kathy, John, Vince, Paul, Fred, Margaret, Francis, Eileen, Mark, Kevin and Helen; their in-laws, 30 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit Friday, Jan. 25th from 3-6 p.m. (formal service at 4 p.m.) A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. Both services will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 39th Ave. at Lawton, SF.
