Russell Sage Van Dyke, son of James Ward Van Dyke and Jennette Peters, was born on 7 August 1896 at Illinois.1,2,3

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Russell filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 February 1918 (at age 21). He was described as height, medium and stout build with blue eyes and light brown hair..4

Russell died on 16 June 1930, at age 33.2,3

     Russell was posted:
Russell was the out of 12 of James W. and Jeanette Van Dyke of rural Greenup, Illinois. Russell died by drowning under questionable circumstances while working as a timekeeper with a construction crew on the Missouri River. Several attempts were made to find the body with no success. His younger brother ,Walter (age 24) drove to St. Charles, Mo. , rented a rowboat and searched the river with a rope tied to his waist as he was unable to swim and the river current was very fast. Walter found the body and brought it back to Illinois for burial. As was told "the baby of the family found his place getting his father's respect .
Russell lived with his sister Pearl and her family while attending college. He was a graduate of Arkansas State Agricultural College and taught there after graduation. He had several other teaching positions in Arkansas and in Cumberland Co). He taught in the Wetherhold School(southeast of Greenup(Cumberland County, Illinois) from 1915-1917. He enlisted in the Navy during WW1 and stayed until 1921 being stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station.
