Maria Augusta Kutschera1

F, b. 26 January 1905, d. 28 March 1987
Maria Augusta Kutschera, 2nd. wife of Georg L. R. von Trapp
Maria Augusta Kutschera was born on 26 January 1905 at Vienna, Wien Stadt, Vienna (Wien), Austria.1

     Maria abstract:
Born Maria Augusta Kutschera on a train enroute to Vienna, Austria, her mother died when she was just two years old. Her father left her with a cousin, so that he could travel, and she was raised as a socialist and atheist, becoming cynical towards all religions. Her attitude changed while in college, when she entered a crowded church believing she was about to hear a Bach concert, only to find that it was a sermon by a visiting Jesuit priest, Father Kronseder. Caught up in the crowd so that she couldn't leave, she soon found herself caught up in his words. At the end of his sermon, she grabbed his elbow demanding, "Do you believe all this?" They got together afterwards to discuss religion, and soon she converted to Christianity. In 1924, she entered the Nonnberg Benedictine Convent intending to become a nun, but in 1926, she was sent to become a governess at the home of a widowed retired Austrian Navy Captain, Georg Ritter von Trapp, with seven children (the Captain's first wife, Agathe, had died of scarlet fever in 1922). They quickly fell in love, and on November 26, 1927, they married, with Maria becoming the stepmother of his seven children: Maria, Rupert, Agathe, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna and Martina. Two years later, Rosemarie was born, and in 1931, Eleonore was born. During the Great Depression, when the family business failed, Georg started a chicken farm to support his family. In 1936, Maria and family friend Monsignor Franz Wasner began the Trapp Family Singers, and they soon became well known when they received high honors at the 1936 Salzburg Music Festival. In 1938, Austria and Nazi Germany were united in the Anschluss (Union), at which the von Trapps made little secret that they were horrified at the rise of the Nazis. German dictator Adolph Hitler invited them to sing at his birthday celebration, but they declined. Georg also turned down the offer of a commission in the German Navy. With increased Nazi pressure to embrace the new regime, the family decided to leave Austria for the United States, arriving in early 1939. They initially settled down in Merion, Pennsylvania, where their last child, Johannes von Trapp, was born. In 1942, they purchased the old Gale Farm in Stowe, Vermont, which in 1950 became the Trapp Family Lodge, offering guests sweeping mountain views in an Austrian style main lodge. Georg von Trapp died in May 1947, and Maria became the head of the family. In 1950, at the urging of a family friend, Maria wrote the family story in the book, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" (1950), which eventually was turned into the successful Broadway musical by Rogers and Hammerstein (1959), and the movie, "The Sound of Music" (1965). In 1957, the Trapp Family Singers broke up and went their separate ways. Maria and three of her children became missionaries in the South Pacific. After several years, she returned to Vermont, and managed the Trapp Family Lodge until her death in 1987, at the age of 82. Bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson.1

Maria, married Capt. Georg Ludwig Ritter von Trapp in 1927.1

Maria died on 28 March 1987, at Copley Hospital, Morrisville, Lamoille, Vermont, at age 82,1 and was buried at Trapp Family Lodge Grounds, Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont.1

Census

Maria and Georg appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Lower Merion, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, at Merion Road, enumerated 7 April 1940. Their children, Rupert, Agathe Johanna Erwina Gobertina, Maria Agatha Franziska Gobertina, Werner, Hedwig Maria Adolphine Gobertina and Johanna were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.2

Maria appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont, enumerated 15 April 1950..3

Obituary

30 March 1987

Maria von Trapp, 82, life inspired 'Sound of Music'

STOWE, Vt. Maria Augusta von Trapp, the guiding force behind a family of singers who won world reknown when their story was portrayed in the play and film The Sound of Music, died of heart failure Saturday in Morrisville, Vt., three days after undergoing surgery. She was 82, and had lived in Stowe, Vt., for more than 40 years. Mrs. von Trapp was hospitalized Wednesday at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville for gangrene of the small bowel along with heart and diabetic problems, her son, Johannes von Trapp, said. The story of the von Trapp family, which fled Austria to avoid complicity with Nazi rule and toured the United States as the Trapp Family Choir, was transformed into one of the movie industry's greatest financial successes, with the release of The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews in 1965. Mrs. von Trapp, who had studied to become a nun before marrying an Austrian war hero, Baron Georg von Trapp, in 1927, said she and the rest of the family received little of the $180-million in revenues from the film. However, she praised it (or honestly depicting her life story. She was born in 1905. After she graduated from the State Teachers College for Progressive Education in Vienna at age 18, she became a candidate for the novitiate at a Benedictine convent in Salzburg. The abbess of the convent sent her to become a governess at the villa outside Salzburg of Baron Georg von Trapp, a highly decorated WWI submarine commander, who had retired with his seven children after his first wife's death. The young woman quickly won the affection of the children. She married the baron in November 1927. The couple later had three children. In August 1936, the family's informal singing became a professional enterprise when they won a choral competition at the Salzburg Festival. The Trapp Family Choir conducted a full tour of Europe the next year. When Austria fell under Nazi rule in March 1938, the family realized that its performances could only continue if it cooperated with the government. They fled with only a few possessions to Italy, then sailed on to New York, arriving penniless. Their first major concert, which brought the Trapp Family Choir national attention, took place in New York on Dec. 10, 1938. The family bought a 660-acre farm in Stowe in 1942, which later became a lodge and summer music camp. The baron died in 1947 at the age of 57.4
