     Mabel Louise Smith was born on 28 August 1890 at Kings, New York.1

     Mabel married Van Dyke Buffett, son of Henry Buffett and Cornelia Eldert Van Dyke, on 11 February 1922, at Flushing, Queens, New York.

Miss Mabel L. Smith, daughter of Lewis H. Smith of Queensboro Hill, Flushing, was married at home Saturday night to Van Dyke Buffett of Brooklyn, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Thomas Hanna MacKenzie of the Reformed Dutch Church, Flushing. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Sarah Smith, as bridesmaid. The bestman was Eliphaz Buffett, a brother of the bridegroom. The ushers were George Miller and Lawrence Bennett.2


     Mabel died in May 1987, at age 96,3 and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York.3

     Mabel and Van appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, at East 37th Street, enumerated 15 April 1930. They were renting, paying $90.00 per month. Van Dyke was working for the Edison Company as an electrican. Their son, Henry V. D, was listed as living with them.5

     Mabel and Van appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, at East 37th Street, enumerated 13 April 1940. Van Dyke owned his home valued at $8600.00. He was working as an electrical mechanic Their children, Henry V. D, were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.6
