Albert N. Van Dyke, son of Nicholas Albert Van Dyke and Sarah Hendrick Eldert, was born on 18 September 1834 at New York.1,3,2

Albert N. Van Dyke, married and farmer, was part of the consolidated list of persons subject to do military duty in the Second Congressional District consisting of Kings County, in June 1863.4

There were four civil war drafts that included 776,000 individuals in that time. The records contain class, congressional district, county, state, residence, name, age on July 1, 1863, race, profession, married status, birthplace, former military service, and remarks. Albert was listed on the Draft Log. At the time he was living at Flatlands, Kings, New York. The month of registration was in June 1863. He was working as a farmer.5

Albert N. Van Dyke was involved in the probate of the estate of Nicholas Albert Van Dyke on 7 September 1881 at Kings, New York.6

Albert was a victim of theft. The entry in the Brooklyn Eagle reads as follows:

FARMER VAN DYKE'S HOARD
Found by a Thief While the Old Man Was Away to Market

At one blow Farmer Albert Van Dyke of Mill Lane, Flatbush, has lost the profit of a whole year's husbandry. Seven hundred dollars were stolen from a box in his bedroom early yesterday morning, while he was on his way home from Wallabout market. The thief didn't have to force an entrance into the old farm house, for when he tried the front door it swung open on well oiled hinges. As a matter of fact, that door had not been locked in twenty-five years. There wasn't a soul in the house. The thief found everything wide open and he leisurely ransacked the place from garret to the cellar, but almost overlooked a common wooden box standing at the head of the lonely farmer's bed. He probably kicked it over and when the lid flew off a pile of crisp, new silver dollar certificates tumbled to the floor. They represented a year's hard toil, for Mr. Van Dyke works a fifty-eight acre farm with the assistance of only a colored man. He also makes his own bed and does his own cooking, being an old bachelor who never has been able to spare the time to go in search of a wife. The police opened their eyes wide when Farmer Van Dyke admitted that he never locked his doors. He said that he never found it necessary. Detectives Betts and Kennedy of the Twenty-third precinct are after the man who took Farmer Van Dyke's money. The Flatbush Hawkshaws are convinced that the money was stolen by a man who once worked on the farm and knew where Mr. Van Dyke kept his treasure box and that there was no lock on it. Farmer Van Dyke says that hereafter he will lock his doors. He may also set some gun traps. He takes his loss philosophically. A few weeks ago an Eagle reporter interviewed a number of Flatlands farmers and was told that they were losing money on this year's products. They now ask, 'Where did Van Dyke get his $700?'

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Albert filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1918 (at age 44), while living at 1631 East 45th Street, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was employed as smelter and described as height, medium and medium build with gray eyes and brown hair..6
