Mary Anne Cleary, first wife of Walter Carmen Van Dyke
     Mary Anne Cleary, daughter of Michael Cleary and Mary Jane O'Loughnan, was born on Saturday, 24 August 1907 at Cahir, Ireland.1,2
     Mary was baptized on 25 August 1907; by Rev. James Everard.1

     Mary and Ellen emigrated on 1 March 1925, from Ireland. According to the ship's manifest, their Uncle, Patrick Cleary, was listed as their nearest relative, he was in the country from where they came. They sailed from COBH, Queentown, Ireland on the ship S. S Caronia and arrived in New York on 09 March 1925. According to the manifest, they were to meet their Aunt, Mrs. M. Shannon, 326 W. 17th Street, New York.3,4

     Mary married Walter Carman Van Dyke, son of Stephen R. Van Dyke and Selina Seaman, on 4 December 1927, at Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York.5,6,2,7

     Mary was naturalized on 12 January 1929, at Mineola, Nassau, New York.2

     Mary was in this photograph which was taken circa 1930, across from Tilford's garage in Bayville.8

     Mary and Walter were in this photograph which was taken circa 1935 on a trip to Montauk Point with family and friends. Mrs Berry was from Maine.8

     Mary was in this photograph which was taken 1939. This photograph, in Maine, the summer prior to her death.8

     Mary died in November 1939, at North County Community Hospital, Glen Cove, Nassau, New York, at age 32. Mary Ann's cause of death was listed as rheumatic heart disease.9 She was buried at Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury, Nassau, New York.10

Census

     Mary appeared on the 1911 Ireland Census of Market Street, Caher, Tipperary, Ireland, in the household of her mother, Mary.11

     Mary and Ellen appeared on the 1925 New York Census of New York City, New York, New York, at West 17th Street, enumerated 1 June 1925. They were listed as "roomers" but, in fact, they were with their aunt, Shannon, and husband. They both were working as file clerks...12

     Mary and Walter appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Hicksville, Nassau, New York, enumerated 21 April 1930. Walter was working as a mechanic in what appeared to be a tractor company. It should be noted, Walter's wife was called 'May' even though her given name was Mary. Their daughter, Evelyn Marie, and niece, Irene were listed as living with them.13
