Nils Fritiof Magnuson1

M, b. 28 February 1885, d. 27 April 1970
Nils Fred Magnuson, husband of Esther Peterson
Nils Fritiof Magnuson was born on 28 February 1885 at Bråten, Västra Ämtervik, Värmland, Sverige.1

Nils departed, 28 Apr 1909 to Coppenhagen, Denmark. He than migrated to England, found on the "S. S. Saxonia" passenger list, departing 04 May 1909 from Liverpool, England. He arrived at the Port of Boston, 13 May 1909.2

Nils married Esther Florence Peterson, daughter of Per Alfred Peterson and Anna Amalia Boquist, on 7 September 1918, at 1614 4th, Seattle, King, Washington.1,3

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Nils filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1918 (at age 33), while living at King, Washington. He was employed as a machinist and described as height, tall and medium build with blue eyes and brown hair..4

Nils was naturalized on 8 December 1920 at United States District Court, Washington.5

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Nils filled out a draft card for World War II on 27 April 1942 (at age 57), while living at Seattle, King, Washington. He was described as 6 foot tall, 195 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes. There was a scar on his left jaw.6

Nils died on 27 April 1970, at Seattle, King, Washington, at age 85,7,8 and was buried at Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Lake Forest Park, King, Washington.9

Census

Nils and Esther appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Seattle, King, Washington, enumerated 12 January 1920. Nils was a machinist. His sister, Esther was also in the home. She was a waitress at a restaurant.10

Nils and Esther appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Seattle, King, Washington, at 31st Avenue N. E., enumerated 7 April 1930. Nils (Fred) owned his home valued at $4500.00. He was working as a mechanic for a machine works company.11

Nils and Esther appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Seattle, King, Washington, enumerated 5 April 1940. Nils was working for the Washington Machine Company as a machinist. He owned his home, valued at $3500.00. Their neice, Jean Marie was listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.12

Nils and Esther appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Seattle, King, Washington, enumerated 13 April 1950. Fred was working as a machinist at a motor rebuild company.13
