     Mary and David appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Sand Hill, Moore, North Carolina, enumerated 7 April 1930. David was renting, paying $25.00 per month. He was working as a building contractor. Their children, Alta M., Blair J., Alva A. and Donald F. were listed as living with them.4

     Mary and David appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Roslyn, Nassau, New York, at Northern Boulevard, enumerated 11 April 1940. Daivd worked as a engineer in the W. P. A. (The Works Progress Administration (renamed during 1939 as the Works Project Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious New Deal agency, employing millions of unskilled workers to carry out public works projects,[1] including the construction of public buildings and roads, and operated large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects). He was renting at the time, paying $25.00 a month. Their children, Alta M., Blair J., Alva A. and Donald F. were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.5
