Albert Emmons1
M, b. circa 1809, d. 5 December 1858
Albert Emmons was born circa 1809 at New York.2
Albert Emmons and Ruth Hendrickson were as the 'compiler' believes, the people in the below article, 'A Flatlands Farmer and His Child'. My reasoning includes the review of the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Federal Census showing Ruth. Note the value of Margaret's real estate as listed in the 1870 census. The sum of $45,000.00 is quite high for this period on time
A search of the 1850 United States Federal Census, Flatlands, New York, Sheet 24, line 1 was accomplished to further identify Mr. Albert Emmens. Accordingly, the census sheets for Ruth (sheet 23) and Albert Emmens (sheet 24), indicate they were either next door neighbors or just across the street. circa 1852 at Flatlands, Kings, New York.3
Albert died on 5 December 1858,4 and was buried at Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He is located next to his daughter, Margaret.5
Albert's property was listed in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle to be auctioned. The auction included all the farm animals, farm equipment, feed of numerous types. It also included kitchen items and all household items on 24 February 1859 at Flatlands, Kings, New York.6

Captain Albert Emmons was a thrifty farmer at Flatlands, Kings County, twenty years ago, and many of the residents there knew him intimately. He was somewhat eccentric, and had a great antipathy to matrimony. He was quite wealthy and had an estate of one hundred sixty acres of land. In his house lived a woman named Mrs. Van Dyck, whom he always represented to be his housekeeper. About the year 1852, Mrs. Van Dyck gave birth to a female child. Emmons faced the community manfully and acknowledged the paternity. He was even fond of the little child, and provided for it handsomely. It is not known that he ever married Mrs. VanDyck, and although she survived him, never made pretension that they had ever bound in wedlock. She cared for him with all the tenderness of a true wife and there are those living who respect her for it. Emmons left a will bequeathing all his property to the child, and provided that if she died with a legal issue it should descend to her children. Should she die without issue, the property was to be divided between his nephews and nieces. The child grew up to be a fine looking lady and no stigma was ever associated with her name. She had many suitors, and last October betrothed to the son of a wealthy farmer of New Lots. It was said that they were soon to be married. In January she was taken sick and the physicians pronounced her disease scarlet fever. The last week in January she died. The farm is located in the village of Flatlands. The 160 acres are valued at $1,500 per acre. The nieces and nephews are ten in number and all reside at Jamaica. They are the Naders, Emmons and Snedecors, all well to do people and farmers. The heirs held one meeting, but no definite action was taken. They estimate that the share of each will be $22,000. Owen Rodolf Engelstad1
M, b. 26 June 1897, d. 11 September 1956
Owen Rodolf Engelstad was born on 26 June 1897 at Hamar, Norway.1,2
Owen married Gerturde Fredrika Wikström, daughter of Frederick Carl Wikström and Anna Matilda Boström, on 26 September 1919, at Tacoma, Pierce, Washington.3
The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Owen filled out a draft card for World War II on 26 April 1942 (at age 44), while living at 2910 1/2 East Spring Street, Seattle, King, Washington. He was working for Olympic Steel Works, Seattle, Washington. He had a scar on his left arm.2
Owen died on 11 September 1956, at Seattle, King, Washington, at age 59.1,4
