BERTRAM STILLWELL RYDER, COLONEL USMC (Retired)


On Friday, March 15, 2013 in McLean, VA. He was born on January 6, 1920 to Edward Clinton and Florence Bennett Ryder, on Ryders Lane in Brooklyn, New York. Husband of the late Janet Elizabeth Leech Ryder; father of Thomas Stillwell Ryder and the late John Ryder; father- in-law of Ann Ryder; grandfather of Edward Stillwell and Alicia Elizabeth Ryder.
Col. Ryder earned a BA degree in Political Science from Colgate University in 1942, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He married Janet Elizabeth Leech on September 27, 1945 in Washington, DC. He earned a Master of Arts in Political Science from George Washington University in 1964.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1968, earning such decorations as Marine Corps Reserve medal, American Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two stars, World War II Victory medal, National Defense Service medal with one star, United National Service medal, Navy Commendation medal, Korean Service medal, Joint Service Commendation medal, and the Legion of Merit.
Col. Ryder also held various positions at Colgate University from 1968-1985, ending as a member of the Board of Trustees and Trustee Emeritus.
Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Foundation at www.alzfdn.org3

     Cornelia married Michael S. Bennett, son of Jacob Bennett and Hannah C. Covert, on 10 May 1853, at Gravesend, Kings, New York. By Rev. A. J. Labaugh.4,5

     Cornelia died on 8 September 1911, at age 77,1,6 and was buried at Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau, New York.1

     Cornelia and Michael appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of New Utrecht, Kings, New York, enumerated 4 August 1860.. Michael was working as a farmer. He had Margaret Doyle, age 18, servant and three others as laborers, all from Ireland. His real estate valued at $18000.00 and personal property at $1000.00 (compiler believes real estate should be $1800.00). Their children, Jacob Duryea and Johanna Maria were listed as living with them.8

     Cornelia and Michael appeared on the 1865 New York Census of New Utrecht, Kings, New York, enumerated 1 June 1865. Michael was a farmer. They had two servants, both from Ireland. Their children, Jacob Duryea, John William and Catharine Annie were listed as living with them.9

     Cornelia and Michael appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of New Utrecht, Kings, New York, enumerated 30 July 1870. Michael was a farmer. They had a Mary Kelly, age 50, from Ireland as a domestic, and two male farm hands from Ireland in the home. Their children, Jacob Duryea, Catharine Annie and Emma Elizabeth were listed as living with them.10

     Cornelia and Michael appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Queens, Queens, New York, at Washington Square, enumerated 4 June 1880. Michael was a farmer. They had one male farm helper in the home. Their children, Catharine Annie, Emma Elizabeth and Nellie were listed as living with them.11

     Cornelia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hempstead, Nassau, New York, enumerated 4 June 1900 Cornelia had two boarders in the home. Their children, Emma Elizabeth and Nellie were listed as living with them.12

     Cornelia appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hempstead, Nassau, New York, enumerated 29 April 1910. Cornelia was living on her own income. The census indicated she had eight children with four living Their children, Emma Elizabeth and Cornelia were listed as living with them..13

Mrs. Cornelias Bennett
Hempstead, September 9 - Mrs. Cornelia Bennett, widow of the late Michael S. Bennett of New Utrecht, and late of Hempstead, died at the residence on Front street here yesterday. Mrs. Bennett was in her sixty-eighth year and leaves four children, all well known in business and social circles on Long Island. Jacob Bennett, the only surviving son, is a resident of Bath Beach. Three daughters, residents of Hempstead, are Mrs. Catherine Rhodes of Front street, and the Misses Emma and Cornelia Bennett. Arangements have not yet been made for the funeral.14
