     Jane Campbell was born on 7 February 1924 at Montreal, Canada.1

     Jane, married Dr. Barton Peck Smith, son of Roger P. Smith and Elsie Mccartney, circa 1948, at Peace Dale Congregational church, Peace Dale, Rhode Island.

Barton P. Smith, Son of Former Cityan, Marries in Rhode Island

Much local interest attends the announcement of the wedding in Peace Dale, R. I„ of the son of a former Waxahachian, with the arrival of the account of the nuptials of Barton Peck Smith and Miss Jane Campbell. The bridegroom’s mother, Mrs. Roger Peck Smith, will be remembered as the former Miss Elsie McCartney of this city. The wedding of the couple was solemnized in the Peace Dale Congregational church with the Rev. R. Vernon Lawson officating at the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Campbell, Peace Dale, and her bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Peck Smith, now of Canajoharie, N. Y. Miss Anne Campbell was her sisters maid of honor, while the bridegrooms brother William Pierce Smith served as best man. Following the wedding, a reception honoring the couple held at the Dunes club, Narragansett, after which the couple departed for a wedding trip. Mr and Mrs. Smith wili establish a home in New York Ciry in the fall. The bridegroom, who is graduate of the Canajohari high school, served as aviation cadet with the United States Army Air forces He was graduated from Yale, with the class of 1947 where he was a member of Berzelius, St. Elmo, the Whiffenpoofs and honorary societies. He is now- attending the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia university, New York City. His bride, who was honored at many prenuptial courtesies, attended Miss Porter's school Farmington, Conn. and Pine; Manor. She is a graduate of Pembroke college, with the class of 1946.1,2


     Jane died on 7 February 2016, at age 92,1 and was buried at Oak Dell Cemetery, South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island.3

SMITH, Jane (Campbell)

Of North Hill, Needham, and Wakefield, Rl, died February 7, 2016, following a long illness. She was born on October 7, 1924, in Montreal, Canada to Mary Hazard Campbell and Wallace Campbell II. Jane was predeceased in 2009 by her devoted husband of 61 years, Barton P. Smith, M.D. They lived in Westwood, MA for over 50 years. She was the loving mother of Heather S. Collins of Hingham, Holly L. Smith-Reynolds of Wakefield, Rl, Martha B. McManamy of Newburyport, Bruce E. Smith of Norwood and Christopher H. Smith, M.D. of Seattle, Washington. Also survived by nine cherished grandchildren: Nicholas, Alison and Hilary Collins; Charles Reynolds; Evan, Conor and Laura McManamy; and Emery and Rae Hirschfeld-Smith. Ms. Smith also had three sons-in-law: Jeffrey Collins, John McManamy, M.D. and Hanson Reynolds and one daughter-in-law, Karin Hirschfeld. She is also survived by her beloved brother Hugh Campbell and his wife Lorli, of Stowe, Vermont, and by 13 nieces and nephews. Jane Smith believed in the value of each individual's worth and demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping special-needs individuals become contributing members of society. She was one of the founding parents of what is now known as The Arc of South Norfolk, where she worked for more than 30 years. Beginning as a parent-volunteer, Jane became Associate Executive Director of The Arc, developing community based vocational, residential, respite and social service programs. Among her significant accomplishments was inspiring Polaroid Corp. to sell 7.5 acres of land in Westwood, valued at over $1 million, for $1 .00 to build "A Place of Our Own," which houses the myriad programs provided by The Arc. Currently The Arc of South Norfolk serves more than 500 families with various programs, envisioned by the founders as a human and civil rights movement. At the time of her retirement in 1997, Ms. Smith's career was recognized in numerous citations from legislators across the Commonwealth and Rl, as well as by her peers who in her honor dedicated the Jane Campbell Smith Community Room at the building she helped fund and build. Jane graduated from Pine Manor Junior College and earned her B.A. cum laude from Brown University (Pembroke College) in 1946. In 1947, she married Barton P. Smith, who was an internist with Dedham Medical Associates for most of his career. Jane obtained a Masters of Science in Management from Lesley University in 1984 and began consulting with the Executive Service Corps where she advised non-profit organizations on a variety of projects. The Smiths were lifelong members of The First Parish of Westwood Church where they were members of the choir and active participants on a number of boards. Jane loved spending time in South County, Rl, where she maintained a second home and participated in many activities: gardening, swimming, visiting with relatives and friends and playing tennis, among them. She was a longtime member of The Dedham Country and Polo Club, the Fox Hill Garden Club, the Chilton Club, and the Afternoon Club. In Rl, she was a lifelong member of The Dunes Club in Narragansett, was active in the South County Garden Club and spent many volunteer hours at the Hazard Memorial Garden in Peace Dale. A memorial service honoring Jane Smith will be held on April 9, at 2:00 P.M. at The Peace Dale Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 261 Columbia Street, Peace Dale, Rl 02SS3. Of interest here because of the family's many Chicago connections is tne announcement from Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Campbell ot Peace Dale, R.I., of the engagement cf their daughter. Margaret Anne, to Andrew Stealey. son of Mr. and Mrs. Poyntell C. Stealey of Saunderstown, R.L Miss Campbell, niece of Miss Eliza Campbell, attended the Mary C. Wheeler school and was graduated from the Garrison Forrest school and from Vassar college. Her fiance was graduated from the Kent school and served five years with the army. The wedding will take place in July. The engagement of Miss Campbell's sister, Miss Jane Campbell, to Barton Peck Smith, son of the Roger P. Smiths of Canajoharie, N.Y. was announced last December.2

In the little mill village of Peacedale R. I., near Narragansett Pier there was a brilliant wedding today attended by society men and women from many cities. The bride was Miss Mary Bushnell Hazard, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rowland Gibson Hazard whose family founded the mills of the town, and the bridegroom was Mr. Wallace Campbell, son of the late Col. Campbell and Mrs. Campbell of Chicago. The wedding was in the village church where the sisters of the bride, Mrs. Robert H. L. Goddard, jr and Mrs. Rush Sturges also were married, the latter too, on New Years day. A wedding breakfast at Holly House, the Hazard home, followed the ceremony. Miss Hope K. Hodgman of Providence, was maid of honor and the bridesmaids were, Miss Susan Bacon of Peacedale, cousin of the bride and Miss Eliza Campbell of Chicago, sister of the bridegroom. Mr. Hugh Campbell of Chicago was his brothers best man. Little Elizabeth Sturges was the flower girl and little Robert H. I. Goddard 3d and Benjamin Sturges nephews of the bride, walked in the procession.1,2


     The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Wallace filled out a draft card for World War II on 25 April 1942, while living at Tower Hill Road, South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island. He was working for "Stumoes (?), Chaffee, and Hazard, Rhode Island.3

     Wallace died on 5 April 1950.4

     Wallace and Mary appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, at Hope Street, enumerated 12 April 1930. He owned his home, valued at $30,000.00. They had two servants and a lodger in the home. Their children, Wallace, Margaret Annie, Jane and Hugh David were listed as living with them.5

Wallace Campbell Dies On Journey to France

ALAMOGORDO. April 22 (JP) Wallace Campbell, 71, well known in Alamogordo and El Paso. died; suddenly April 5 on the liner Ile, de France it was learned today. He was a former official of the La Luz Clay Products Co. He and Mrs Campbell, preparing to disembark for a two-month tour of France, planned to visit their son, Hugh, a student at the Sorbonne in Paris." Campbell was assocaiated with, the late Rowland Hazard in Alamogordo in the clay business and in ranching interest in La Luz canyon.4
