Evelyn Van Dyke

F, b. 24 December 1928
Relationships
Sister of Robert Edward Van Dyke
Sister of John William Van Dyke
Sister of Walter Carl Van Dyke
Evelyn Van Dyke, wife of Michael J. Collins
Evelyn Van Dyke, daughter of Walter Carmen Van Dyke and Mary Anne Cleary, was born on 24 December 1928, daughter of Walter Carmen Van Dyke and Mary Anne Cleary, at New York.1

Evelyn Van Dyke is in this photograph with Walter and Willet which was taken circa 1931 at Nany Dyke's house. The man with the pipe is "Mr. Bennet" (he lived next door), at Bayville, Nassau, New York, (Evelyn is in the picture with her doll.)2

Evelyn and Selina were in this photograph which was taken circa 1931. On the back of the original picture it says," Locust Ave., Nany Dyke. Evelyn and her doll 3 years old." Considering the time when this picture was taken, it i very possible that the person standing to the right of the car on the right was Madeline at Bayville, Nassau, New York.2

Evelyn and Robert were in this photograph which was taken circa 1934 playing around the garage where their Dad worked. At that time they lived over the Tilford's garage in Bayville. Dad worked on cars full time. at Bayville, Nassau, New York.2

Evelyn Van Dyke is in this photograph with Walter and Mary and Robert Edward Van Dyke, which was taken circa 1935 on a trip with family and friends. Mrs Berry was from Maine.2

On 29 October 1939 Walter kept notes on Mary Anne's last hours of life. It is well worth reading to really feel the impact of his experience. It wasn't easy for him. He had two children to also consider as his world was falling around him.
See Note: Click Here.3
Evelyn was on 6 April 1951, participating in a Minstrel Show given by the Oyster bay Legion Auxiliary. The show was held both Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:30 PM in the Oyster Bay High School.4

He placed a newspaper announcement, announcing the marriage of his daughter Evelyn to Michael J. Collins. Michael is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Collins of Cove Road, Oyster Bay, New York. Evelyn's attendant was Miss Pearl Kurowski and Michael's brother Patrick was the best man. on 23 August 1951.5 As of 26 August 1951, her married name was Collins.6

Evelyn, at age 22, married Michael J. Collins at age 23, son of Michael Collins and Eva Buckley, on 26 August 1951 at Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York.6

Evelyn and Walter were in Washington, D.C. The picture was taken in September 1951.2

Evelyn and Michael were in this photograph which was taken June 2003 with the family to celebrate Mike's 75th birthday. The bash was held at "Old Westbury Gardens". Heather, Jeff's wife, took the picture. Frank, Barb's husband, could not be there. Sarah, Rob's wife and Zachary, could not be there. Evelyn took the time to provide an outline of who was where in the picture. You can see the picture on the first camera image and the outline on the second image..2,7
Evelyn received an e-mail from John on 5 January 2006 remembering her younger years.
"I remember my father showing me the house on Perry Avenue. It was a beautiful big old house in good condition. Then, I guess Stephen and Selena moved to the house down from Mountain Avenue - I can't remember the name - was it Locust Avenue. We lived next to the school - they were down the road from us near the water. We were on Oak Place - there were just two houses there - one facing Mountain Avenue and we lived up behind that house. There was a huge barn next to our house and we had great fun playing in there. School was out the front door and across our road through the woods to school. It was a great place to live - we had woods all around us. Out house was big - four bedrooms - we lived there until I was out of eighth grade and then moved to Locust Valley. Bayville was a great place to live and so was Locust Valley. Uncle Arthur lived at the bottom of Mountain Avenue in one of the two beautiful brick cottages at the entrance to Harrison Williams’s estate. It was a huge estate - on the water. He was a chauffeur for Williams. I remember one night when he picked me up in Locust Valley in the Rolls Royce and took me to the movies. What a car that was! I think that Cornelia may have moved to Oyster Bay when Grandpa Steven and Nanny Dyke built their house on Locust Avenue (if that is the name of the street.) This whole ancestry thing is great. I have to try to find more about my mother's side. Talk to you next week. Could you send me your phone number again? Thanks. Love to you both -Eve"
at Bayville, Nassau, New York.8

On 12 June 2006 Evelyn sent a letter to John . The excitement came when she received the marriage certificate of her mother's parents and the birth certificate of her mother and aunt. She has been trying for quite some time to locate the information. It was a "Red Letter Day" for her. She sent copies of it all to John.9

Evelyn Van Dyke was a witness when Robert Edward Van Dyke and Betty Fournier had arrived at the suggested meeting place (Oyster Bay Library). Seems Betty had told Bobby she thought it was past time to replace the car battery. Well, it seems the battery was still good. (At least till they got to the library). That's when the "heat" really started. As you can see by looking at the picture, Evelyn was (sort of) hinting to Bobby, maybe the one in the back of the SUV was a better one. In any case, a new battery started the car. in July 2006.10 John was on a trip to New York for Jamie's (Walter and Doreen's oldest daughter) wedding. The trip also included a nostalgia and genealogy research venture. Many pictures were taken. There were a few pictures that fell in the memorable class. Here are two of those pictures. on 6 July 2006.10

On 8 August 2006, John sent a letter to Evelyn. Her letter is about her "can't wait" for the cooler weather. Also, she helps define Dad's journal and the names in there.11

Ruth was as the "compiler" believes, the person in the below article, "A Flatlands Farmer and His Child". My reasoning includes the review of the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Federal Census showing Ruth. Note the value of Margaret's real estate as listed in the 1870 census. The sum of $45,000.00 is quite high for this period on time

A Flatlands Farmer and His Child Fortune Disposed of by a Death. Captain Albert Emmons was a thrifty farmer at Flatlands, Kings County, twenty years ago, and many of the residents there knew him intimately. He was somewhat eccentric, and had a great antipathy to matrimony. He was quite wealthy and had an estate of one hundred sixty acres of land. In his house lived a woman named Mrs. Van Dyck, whom he always represented to be his housekeeper. About the year 1852, Mrs. Van Dyck gave birth to a female child. Emmons faced the community manfully and acknowledged the paternity. He was even fond of the little child, and provided for it handsomely. It is not known that he ever married Mrs. VanDyck, and although she survived him, never made pretension that they had ever bound in wedlock. She cared for him with all the tenderness of a true wife and there are those living who respect her for it. Emmons left a will bequeathing all his property to the child, and provided that if she died with a legal issue it should descend to her children. Should she die without issue, the property was to be divided between his nephews and nieces. The child grew up to be a fine looking lady and no stigma was ever associated with her name. She had many suitors, and last October betrothed to the son of a wealthy farmer of New Lots. It was said that they were soon to be married. In January she was taken sick and the physicians pronounced her disease scarlet fever. The last week in January she died. The farm is located in the village of Flatlands. The 160 acres are valued at $1,500 per acre. The nieces and nephews are ten in number and all reside at Jamaica. They are the Naders, Emmons and Snedecors, all well to do people and farmers. The heirs held one meeting, but no definite action was taken. They estimate that the share of each will be $22,000. Article courtesy of “The Brooklyn Eagle”. http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/
