Henry and Alice Marriage

- The marriage of Henry B. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Smith of Charleston, and Miss Alice Mabel Cross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses S. Cross of Foxcroft, took place at noon on New Years day at the home of the officiating clergyman, Rev. J. H. Wilkin, pastor of the Congregational church of these towns.      Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Henry filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 June 1917 (at age 29), while living at Summer Street, Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine. He was described as short height, medium build, light blue eyes, and dark brown hair. At the time he was working as a grocery clerk for E. W. Judkins. He was described as height..8

Henry purchased for twenty-eight hundred dollars the following real estate situated in said Foxcroft, bounded on the North by land of Fred Hill, on the East by the road, on the South by land owned by Ernest Berce, and on the West by land of said Cross, to Moses Cross . This being the same conveyed to me this day by the said John R. Klimarvicz, Charles W. Hayes Elmer N. Toole, Piscataquis, Maine on 21 April 1921.9

Obituary

HARMONY - Mrs. Alphonso Davis received word last week that her son, Horace Smith, was dangerously ill in Bellevue hospital in New York city where he had but recently been transferred as railway mail clerk, and Mr. Davis left at once for that place, but before he reached there Mrs. Davis received another dispatch saying that her son had passed away. Mr. Davis returned Friday with the remains and the funeral services were held at the home on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Mulligan of Athens speaking words of comfort to the sorely stricken family. The body was taken to Bangor on Monday for burial in Mt. Hope cemetery. The cause of the young man's death was pneumonia, lasting but five days, and his age 28 years. He was a graduate of Dexter high school where he made many friends, and had been in the mail service for ten years, the greater part of which time had been spent in Augusta, leaving there only about six weeks ago. Of a fine, manly bearing, pleasing manner and true gentlemanly instincts, he won friends whereever he went, and was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him best. Exceptionally fond of home and the loved ones there he always spent his spare time there, and sorely will they miss those visits to which they have always looked forward with so much pleasure. Besides the mother and step-father, who has been in every sense a father, he leaves two sisters, Miss Marcia Smith of Bangor, and Mrs. Clifford Burrill of Dedham. The profusion of the floral offerings, among which were a beautiful wreath from the clerks in the Augusta post office and a Masonic piece from Bethlehem lodge, F. and A. M. of Augusta spoke silently of the love and esteem in which he was held. Among the relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Cora [Smith] Reynolds of Northeast Harbor, Thomas Smith and Joseph Smith of Marion, Rev. Oscar Smith of Orono, Miss Nellie Smith of Shiloh, Orlando Staples of Levant and R. S. Pratt of Bangor.9
